I inherited a 1940 Johnson AT-10 5 hp motor and the recoil rope was broken, I took off the cover and discovered that the recoil spring had also broke. I could not find a manual for this model so I am looking for a recoil spring part no or a source where I could find a replacement spring.
Thanks for any help you can provide,
CharlesMay 24, 2021 at 6:04 pm #238886If the spring is broken near it’s mounting you can remove the loop at the end of the spring and reattach it to the spring.
You will also surely need new leather primer seals and instructions to replace them. If so contact me Lloyd Lautner 231-929-7479May 24, 2021 at 6:18 pm #238889I was not aware that you could remove the loop at the end of the spring, it is broken near the end so I will give that a try. I will call you if I need the primer seals.
Thanks Lloyd,

I have to rewind the spring on mine and see about shortening/replacing the cable reinforced cord too.Jason

I was able to find a parts manual on one of the AOMCI Texas chapter website and was able to download it. The Johnson part no for the spring is 41-197 and the starter rope is 42-137. The closest part I have found for the spring 0395460 from Marine engine and for the rope is 44019. The part file is attached

Thank you for sharing the recoil part numbers. That will help. I just got one of those part catalogs in the mail.
Now I just need to find one of the owner/operation manuals.
Please keep us posted on how yours goes. I am curious as we have the same model and I am in the learning mode.Jason

I decided to sell my motor since I don’t have a boat any longer and its just been sitting in my garage.
