Greetings,
I just picked up a 1940 Johnson DT-10 from a friend. It all seems to be there. I am new to the hobby so please forgive my rookie questions.
The recoil start is off the motor in a box in pieces. Does anyone have a diagram of how it should be assembled? Or can you point me to a manual please?
Second, are these direct drive or do they have a neutral? Reason I ask is when spinning the motor by hand, the prop doesn’t turn, but if I spin the prop, it will act like it is engaged. I have messed with the thing all of 5 minutes so I could be missing something…
Thank you in advance,
Jason in Michigan.-

If I grab the prop I can spin 1/4 – 1/2 turn, can kind of feel gears then it’s a hard stop. Sounds like I can hear drive shaft spinning in housing below the powerhead when manipulatingbthe prop.
I forgot. Friend I bought it from said he thought it had seized, pulled the recoil off and it seemed fine. Not sure what the heck happened.May 6, 2021 at 9:45 pm #237886It should only take a few minute to pull things apart and have a look in the gear case.
Prepare to be boarded!
May 7, 2021 at 6:43 am #237895I’ve never pulled one of these apart. Is there anything I should be extra cautious with? I found an online link to a 1939 manual (of sorts). I need to sit down and go through it. Seems a little vague at first glance. Is there anything out there with a more thorough explanation?
May 7, 2021 at 8:41 am #237896From what I remember, remove the exhaust snout above the prop,
disconnect the bolts and water line on the water pump, remove
the gear case cap bolts.
The water pump has a spring loaded piston inside, and a couple of
“check balls”, so make sure nothing flies or rolls away when you take
it apart.P.S.- It never hurts to take photos as you take it apart, so you’ll have
reference on how it goes back together!Prepare to be boarded!
