Before getting another drive shaft, look the castings over as best you can, to see if any housings are bent, even a matter of just a tiny bit. While I am not familiar with the unique personality of the DT-10s, usually when a drive shaft just snaps, it’s because of a misalignment somewhere.
Long live American manufacturing!
May 19, 2021 at 12:58 pm #238596I will try putting straight edges against the drive tube to see if I can detect any bend. The driveshaft slid out easily, wasn’t bound up.
Someone mentioned checking the shock absorber on the prop shaft, that slid off easily. Is there a way of checking that for function?Thank you.
May 20, 2021 at 7:44 pm #238681The outer tube appears to be straight. The driveshaft has rust on it and an area towards the bottom that is noticeably galled and necked down. When I put the driveshaft in the tube, it slides in, but doesn’t spin easily. Thinking a replacement driveshaft and driveshaft tube. Experienced minds please chime in. Thank you.

May 20, 2021 at 9:29 pm #238683I’d be wondering about the old driveshaft bushing, if that’s galled up as well.
Not sure if it’s one that can be easily replaced? Was the broken driveshaft
seized in the housing?Prepare to be boarded!
May 20, 2021 at 10:30 pm #238698I haven’t looked at the bushing. The driveshaft slid up and out easily. I don’t have a assembly drawing or manual, safe to assume the bushing is below the driveshaft tube in the lower unit?
May 21, 2021 at 8:20 am #238699I don’t see a driveshaft bushing listed as a replaceable part. It would be in the top of the
gear case foot. The bushing may be cast in place and line bored.1939-40-Johnson-5-hp-LTATDT-Parts-Manual

Thank you for sharing that, seeing the parts is VERY helpful.
Your comment jogged my memory, I read somewhere that the gearcase has to be replaced if the bushing is bad. I have a line on a lower assembly that includes a driveshaft. Probably beat to go that route. I should be able to reuse the inner casing tube since nothing bears against it.
When you redid your motor, did you pull the inner casing tube? If so how did you remove the tube as it’s slotted at the top?
Thanks!May 21, 2021 at 2:41 pm #238722I can’t really remember what the “inner casing” tube to which you refer, looks like,
and I find no photos showing that I had it apart.
Does the parts diagram show it as a separate part?
Maybe the lower unit you have an eye on will include the tube?Prepare to be boarded!
May 21, 2021 at 2:44 pm #238724It’s what the driveshaft runs through. You have to pull the powerhead to see the the tube and slots. It is a seperate in part. Didn’t know if you took your motor down that far.
The one I had the lead on sold yesterday, figures. Working on another lead.May 21, 2021 at 2:46 pm #238725It’s this part
