The prop I ordered for the subject motor arrived in the mail today.
Included was the prop nut. I thought “good”…….. quick clean, paint,
and throw the motor in the test tank.
As I was measuring up a brass shear pin for the installation, I realized
I’m missing something that retains the shear pin in place. lest it ends
in the lake, motor revving, and me rowing home.I believe it’s some kind of “cup” affair that goes over the shear pin,
and the prop nut holds the cup in place.I can’t find an actual photo of one, but I presume it’s the piece
the parts diagram calls the “Prop Collar”.It seems like I’ve seen similar parts that I’m imagining, like
a brass cup.Perhaps I can make a cup on the lathe out of brass or aluminum,
but if anyone knows what one for this motor looks like, that would
be great!Prepare to be boarded!
July 18, 2022 at 11:22 pm #263190Buc, my internet finally started working again, the heat really slows things down around here. I read your post and I went out in the garage in my BVD’s and took a couple pictures of that propeller collar. Maybe the cover from a bottle of olives might work! It looks like it might be stainless but for sure you need something to hold your pin in it’s spot!

July 19, 2022 at 9:18 am #263208Much appreciated Dale!
I’m heading out in the garage shortly, and will see what I can find or make.
Heat wave here too…….. hot and muggy.Prepare to be boarded!
July 19, 2022 at 2:31 pm #263218I got started on making a new prop collar / cup, but circumstances
beyond my control caused me to close up the shop for today.
So far I machined out a circular blank by trepanning it on the
lathe, out of 1/16″ brass plate, and am going to try to “metal form”
it on the lathe, forcing it over a piece of round stock that’s machined
to the size of the prop hub.
No idea what tool I’ll use yet to form the cup, but I may have to anneal the
brass some so it doesn’t crack.
I’ve never tried it before, but have watched people on YouTube from brass pots, etc.Prepare to be boarded!
July 20, 2022 at 11:38 am #263286My “metal spinning” career on the lathe is over, after two attempts!
The 1/32″ brass plate was way too thick to manipulate, ever after
I tried heating it up with the little bottle torch. Doubt if the big torch
would have made it turn out better. The second attempt was out of some .010 brass sheet stock, and
was “better”, and probably could have used it in a pinch, but…….I decided to machine a cap / collar out of aluminum round stock.
The tricky part was that the thickness of the collar that’s sandwiched
between the prop and prop nut could only be .020, or you cant
get the prop nut cotter key installed.
So far it’s survived a two minute barrel test…… hopefully it will
make it through the future lake test!Prepare to be boarded!
July 20, 2022 at 1:05 pm #263294If you need thicker cap, remove a little from the nut to fit the cotter pin.

That’s a excellent idea Dale……. wished I would have thought of it
before I made the cap thinner!
If the cap cracks, I’ll know what to do now, lol.Prepare to be boarded!
July 20, 2022 at 8:42 pm #263316.do it before you lose the prop.
July 20, 2022 at 11:24 pm #263324.do it before you lose the prop.
After thinking about it, even if the collar breaks loose,
the nut and cotter key will keep the prop from falling off,
but a guy could end up rowing, and that’s no fun either!Prepare to be boarded!
