Just recently bought a 1946 mercury kds3 and I am in the process of stripping it down. This is my first restore and am look forward to doing more. My question is that I pulled the lower unit and did not find a impeller or even a housing where an impeller would go. Am I missing something here. Also missing the side panels if anyone had them I know they are hard to come by.
      Thanks

Might be upstream of the prop, behind a cover that is turned with a spanner wrench. Might be backwards thread also. The pros will have more info. Stay tuned!

          Hello,

The water pump impeller is located forward (ahead) of the propeller. Remove the propeller and propeller clutch, and (propeller) clutch drive pin. Remove snap ring and impeller plate/water pump housing cover to remove impeller drive hub and impeller. You may find it wise to take a few pictures as you go along to help with reassembly. I have a new impeller and many (new) parts if wanted.

          Regards,
          Joe

Bought from a guy downsizing, it has been. Sitting for 30 years. His family owned a boat rental place and it was used there. Another thing I found interesting is that the throttle control is screwed in looks like it came from the factory like tbat so that it cannot be adjusted. Guy I got it from said there was one speed on it. Appreciate all the advice 25 years old here so getting into it young and loving it so far!

That makes sense, yes definitely interested in parts. The piston is stuck right now cylinder is full of pb blaster and I tap the sidewalls daily and hammer a wooden Dowl down it.

Welcome the the Early K Model Mercury outboard motors. They may appear to be simple but they are well though out modular designs. They do have a trap for the unwary in that the fasteners vary and were intended for specific locations. Almost without exception you will find
carburetor cowl, spark plug cove and acorn shaped plastic knobs gone. Stuck is very common
condition. Be very gentle. Persuade stuck fasteners and components to come apart. Force is
not wise. Getting it disassembled is half the job. Cleaning and prepping parts is also a big part
                of process.
Jason Baxter’s Old Wizard site has a lot of useful information and photos that should be helpful
as Kiekhaefer made Wizards about same as Mercurys.

If you would like to take some pictures of the throttle control, you can send them to me at info@fergusonpoolemarine.com and then I may be able to better understand.
