Hey everyone. I was given a 1947 sears elgin with the recoil from a very nice fellow club member. Anyhow I can’t get the thing to spark. I checked for resistance from the end of the spark plug wire to either lead on the coils. Only one had resistance. Visually everything looks good. I cleaned the points and it won’t spark on the coil with resistance. When I hold the end of the spark plug wire and turn the motor over it doesn’t shock me unless I’m touching metal. I can’t figure it out

Most times, an engine that old is going to need new condensers.

        Long live American manufacturing!

Are the coils black or orange?

They are orange with a black rubber protector around the outside. Never seen that before but I typically mess with omc stuff. Branching out a little haha

Good. Those orange Wico shellaced coils are darn near bullet proof.  It is rare to find one bad.  You might want to explore that resistance issue further.

I’m wondering if there’s a break in the spark plug wire. It’s just odd the the coil with resistance doesn’t want put out a spark. Even if I grab the end it doesn’t shock me unless I’m touching metal

Birds that land on the power line “hot” wire don’t get shocked either.

I’m not sure I understand the relation of that to a magento

without a ground you will not receive a shock.
