Check compression, check spark, and check the water pump impellers before trying to start. That motor has two impellers and they are difficult to find. And if you find them, plan on paying a fortune for them. I have a 1948 Sportwin and luckily the impellers were good. I did have to replace a coil, and do a lot of work on the carb. Carb parts aren’t available so I had to fabricate parts/seals. My motor runs great now.

70 PSI in each cylinder.  High enough to continue the rebuild or cut my losses?

        Thanks

I would try to run it.                 comp. may come up  anyway                      60’s      9.5 hp   sportwins run fine on 65 +    run it with a good shot of engine cleaner   on the next fill up.

That pretty good for a motor from this time.
Because of the fuel most compression ratios
were only around 6 to 1.

            .

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Any idea of the function of the attached fine-threaded plug is?  I was very concerned that I would cross-thread it and sure enough, that’s exactly what I did!

Where is this part? Doesn’t look like anything on my Sportwin.

Oh, yours is the opposed twin. Not like mine.
