Finishing a rebuild on a Ward Seaking 84GG9007A that I started 6 years ago. Its a 3hp single cylinder. I am not sure how to set the timing on this thing? I have a manual for similar models but it doesn’t specify for single cylinder. Plus I dont see any timing marks on the armature plate. Any help would be appreciated.

September 4, 2015 at 4:13 am #23160Thanks for the answer…I have one of those too and needed to know the point gaps.
September 4, 2015 at 2:27 pm #23186Thanks.
Is there supposed to be a special relation between where the pistons sits, where the throttle advance lever is and when the point is open?September 4, 2015 at 3:08 pm #23192Yes, but it is fixed by design and not adjustable. Except by moving the throttle lever when you change speeds.

Re:’49 Montgomery Wards 5hp
I found this old post and answer from Frank. I pulled the rotor magnet and advance plate off my Monkey Wards GG9014A but failed to note any installation marks or reference points. Also did not think to TDC either of the cylinders. Ive searched every inch of the flywheel, rotor magnet and advance plate for alignment marks. Cant find a thing.
If I’m reading what Frank is saying correctly, I didn’t mess up too bad? Just reinstall the plate in a position that allows proper advance and set the points and coil heel gaps, correct?
Best Regards,
Yep, 1AM pacific time and still up reading and presumably learning…

When people first get into old outboards the tend to want to apply
their automotive experience to the timing of an outboard magneto.
This short video demonstrates the difference.

That is just too dang simple.
I pondered this several times today as I worked on my advance plate, coils, etc.
The ah-ha came when I did a mock install of the plate in about 4 different orientations. Bottom line, the cam at the top of the crank is the maestro of the whole shooting match, right? It knows where the pistons are, so all else is moot? (Sorry about the mixed metaphors).
I think I get it, I was definitely making it harder than it is.
Thx!

You don’t quite have it yet but I think I can get you there.
We thing alike as far as the cam knowing were the pistons
are but you can’t dismiss the points. Its there location that
determines when the spark will occur relative to the pistons
location in the cylinder. Retarded, advances, TDC, -“Timing”.
This magneto and distributor both control the “Timing”
the same way except for ——-
.
How the points are moved.
.
Disregarding the mechanical advance as it controls the rotor.
