I was wondering what type of spark plugs to use for this motor, a 1948 Elgin 5/5.5hp motor.

What’s the model number of your motor? My ’54 book shows five horse motors called for a Champion J-12J gapped at 0.050″.  Others called for a J-11J.

I found that spec for your West Bend built motor on page 298 of the Old Outboard Book. The 0.050″ gap is also shown for West Bends on the next page with the points set at 0.020″ so I guess it must be right. All you can do is try it and if the spark is weak, you can try tightening the gap a bit to see if it improves.
