Hello, I have a 1948 Evinrude Lightfour. However, one of the spark plug boots is missing, is there any way to fix this without replacing the points? If not, where can I find these parts?

Dang PC wont let me post photos here or anywhere else lately. File Explorer keeps crashing when I try. Time to burn the midnight oil and try and figure it out I guess.

Is there a place I can buy these terminals?

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

On my motor, that Rajah connector seems to have broken off, is there any way to straighten the wire back out so it won’t fray?

I use heat shrink tubing on mine.

Thank you! Do you know what the spark plug type is as well? I can’t seem to find an identification on the remaining plugs.

The book I have list the Champion 5M-J superseded
by the D9-J which now crosses with several plugs
the Champion being D9. None of these plugs are
familiar to me nor is the motor your working on but
I suspect it needs a short plug. I don’t know if the D9
is a short plug. I’ve never seen any spark plugs that
didn’t have a part number on them somewhere.

May 4, 2022 at 12:32 pm #259408A readily available NGK AB6 gapped at .025″ will make a good replacement for the discontinued Champion 5M-J. One nice thing about NGK plugs is they have a screw on terminal for Rajahs while Champions don’t.
These plugs have 18mm threads instead of 14mm as found on the four cylinder Evinrude Zephyrs which thrive on shorty plugs to prevent arcing under the front cover. The Light Fours have a bit more room under the cover so a regular length plug should work OK even with exposed Rajah. The ignition systems in these motors are sensitive so the points must be clean and polished and gapped precisely to .020″ for them to work properly. The original condensers are rated at 0.20 uF and the motor requires 3/4 pint of oil per gallon of gas.
