You don’t want muriatic acid anywhere near an aluminum tank or you will be looking for a replacement tank before you can get the top back on the container.  Is the tank magnetic?

Well, I’d swear they are steel.  That’s why they rust so badly.  Your mileage may vary.

Frank’s got it right.  steel tanks on the Scotts, Firestones, and Corsair motors of that era.

The book says starting in ’48, the Scott tanks were steel on the top and the bottom was cast aluminum, glued together with a special plastic adhesive.   I’ve had many where the seams were JB-ed after they sprung a leak, apparently the adhesive had a shelf life.  If the ’48 Firestone had the older tank, it was all lead-coated steel..
