I just acquired a super 5, I’m not really great with these motors But it only fires in one cylinder it runs fine one one cylinder but it should run on two so i’m asking what would be wrong for it to only fire in one cylinder?
May 21, 2022 at 8:28 pm #260217Does it have spark on both cyl.?
May 21, 2022 at 8:48 pm #260218no and its not the spark plug because it is brand new, i’m
thinking its the coil but where would i get one
May 21, 2022 at 9:51 pm #260227Mason make sure the points are clean. Use some find sandpaper and then snap the points on a business card then snap them together on the contacts. Make sure they are opening and somewhere 18 thousandth gap.

May 22, 2022 at 5:51 am #260262You will need to get the flywheel off, to inspect the ignition system. The flywheel is held on with a special nut and has a tapered hole that wedges itself onto the crank shaft. It won’t just easily lift off. What kind of access to tools do you have? That would be good to know, so we can tell you how to do it, based on what you have available. In addition to regular mechanic’s hand tools, you’ll need at the very least, a large adjustable wrench or Channel lock pliers (for the special flywheel nut) and a flywheel puller or at least, a “vibration dampener puller,” which you can get at any Harbor Freight store.

May 22, 2022 at 5:11 pm #260326I was having trouble pulling the flywheel off I have the large wrench but what would I use to hold the flywheel still? I tried holding it but the nut was just too tight on there.
May 22, 2022 at 5:34 pm #260327Magneto ignition depends upon coil, points, condenser, wire, spark plug. Inspect and repair/renew as required. KF5 and later models in series are not the ideal first project outboard if they have an issue that requires more than minor service. As with any old outboard replacing the rubber impeller is a given.
Good Luck

Most common item used to hold the flywheel is a strap wrench, or
a puller designed to put a foot long bar in it to keep the flywheel from
turning when you tighten down the puller bolt.Prepare to be boarded!
May 22, 2022 at 9:31 pm #260344Maybe you can get somebody to hold it for you. You can make a strap wrench out of an old belt, too. I don’t know how, exactly. Maybe that can be googled too?

May 23, 2022 at 5:14 am #260358There is a 12″ capacity plumbing strap wrench on Amazon for about $15. I can’t get the link to work right, but it’s there if you search for it. It should work for your KF5 and many other small motors.
Long live American manufacturing!
