Hello everyone,
I am working on a 195? mercury mark 5 for a family member that hasn’t ran in a while. I don’t really know anything about mercury outboards, never worked on one till now. So far, I have got the engine free, worked on the rewind starter some, got spark, and got it to pop out the water. I am working on the carb right now. But I removed the propeller because I believe the neutral needs adjusted because it doesn’t go into neutral. Does anyone have any advice on how to do that (I can see someone tried and failed)? Also is the hub of the prop supposed to come out with these little gears not inside of the prop (see pic)? One last question for now, I believe the ID tag is supposed to be between the 2 transom clamps. If this is true, I don’t have an ID tag. Is there an alternative spot to find the model number and serial number? I don’t see a welch plug like OMC or anything that is too obvious to me at least.

That is the friction clutch mechanism in the prop hub. Mercury was trying to eliminate the need for a shear pin.

number life will be easier. Keep
women and children out of earl shot when working on this series,
Best i can say agout them is they
are Green and Dull Aluminum,

The powerhead seems to be OK, but lower end was something Mercury
was not happy with.They changed

May 9, 2025 at 2:43 pm #296298I don’t see anything on the gas tank it self except the remanence of a old decal. But on the bracket it mounts to I see Pat. Off. 766012. Is that the serial#?
May 9, 2025 at 3:36 pm #296299It is on the front of the gas tank band ( start stop directions) held on by 4 pins. Sorry.

Do you have a photo of the engine in question? Mk5s didnt have a decal on the tank, they had a metal lower wrap cowl, chrome trim/tank ring with MERCURY molded into it and the model,hp and lubrication instructions on a large metal tag riveted to the front of it.
