Interesting that this came up, because I brought up "What if they did?" back a couple years ago. If Evinrude had the 1952 Evinrude Mate 1.5hp and Johnson had the 1952 MD 1.5hp, these would have been cool "little brothers" for the Lightwin and JW. Plus, the antique outboard enthusiasts would take interest in them. Only difference is, you take the little 3hp motors and remove a cylinder and coil.
Maybe he had one of the OMC Gale built single cylinder 3hp motors. I’ve heard more than a few old timers way back when say "These Buccaneers, etc., are the same as a Johnson or Evinrude".
Yep. Gale built several 3 HP 1948-1950 private label motors -Montgomery Ward Sea King/Gamble Hiawatha/Spiegel Brooklure/Atlas Royal/Gale Buccaneer/and Goodyear Sea Bee. I have a Goodyear Sea Bee.
I have my Grandfather’s 1953 Gale 3hp "Buccaneer" that
I used in the 70’s fishing. Always got me home,
but failed to leave the dock a couple of times when
it caught on fire!
We had a 7.5 hp that turned itself into a single cylinder. My brother was running it one afternoon when the top rod ventilated the crankcase. He fished out a few chunks of metal and for grins pulled the motor over – and it started! He made it home, four miles, on the bottom cylinder! But, somehow, I don’t think that’s quite what you had in mind…
