I know your Speeditwin is not covered here, but what the heck, here’s the link anyway. 😉

March 5, 2016 at 12:07 am #32922I’m,concerned you think the low speed adjustment is in fact the high speed adjustment. The knob on the top of the carb is high speed adjustment, and yes, it should be opened 1 1/2 turns to start a cold engine. Once running and warm, I’ll bet it smooths out at about 3/4 turn. The low speed needle is on the underside of the carb and should normally be about 1/2 turns open.
Engines will die from not enough fuel and too much fuel!

March 5, 2016 at 12:38 am #32924That sound a bit like mine did before I got it set up right. I kept loosing one cylinder due to too much fuel. It sounds like yours may be picking up and dropping back to one cylinder. As suggested, maybe close you low speed needle a bit, take you plugs out and make sure they are clean and dry to start with. Once running, see if one cylinder stays cooler at the top. Once I leaned mine out, I had better results.
It was my first square tanker and until I had it figured out, I was wondering why anyone would want to mess with these 🙂March 5, 2016 at 3:13 am #32931I was able to run my motor today. The sun was in a perfect position to see right down the throat.
I am full aware of which is which in regards to High and Low speed jet adjustment devices. I looked down the throat and I could see gas emitting right out of the high speed jet (The one in the front). I decided to close the low speed just needle. I was able to close it completely and the motor still ran, and no change in the amount of gas emitting from the high speed jet.
I am going to take the jet out of the Carb tomorrow and see what shape it’s in. I still had a needle from the original Carb that was on this engine and tried it. Same results. The old Carb was totally corroded and actually breaking apart so I changed it. I was not able to get the actual jet out and I no longer have the Carb 🙁
Attached is a pic of the Starting and Operating Instructions that are on a decal on the tank. Zoom in and look at number 4. It states the Low Speed Needle is 1 1/2 turns. You have to notice there is a 1 between the 4 and the 5, then a 1/2 which to me says 1 1/2 turns out as a starting point.
I will post back how the High speed jet looks one I have it out.
Thanks everyone!!

March 8, 2016 at 11:08 am #33105Hi All,
I have located another Carb hoping it will be the fix. I will let everyone know the outcome.
I truly appreciate all of the input. This place is cool for getting answers about the off the wall issues we run into messing with these old beasts, but oh the joy of making one run again!!!!
Thanks again
March 8, 2016 at 11:53 am #33107Viking,
I will be watching for your answers. I will be running mine for the first time very soon and can use all the information I can get.
March 9, 2016 at 3:46 am #33145A motor can be too rich if its getting too much gas, but it can also be too rich if its not getting enough good air. Its always a good idea to place an electric fan in front of a motor blowing good air at the carb, when in a barrel. Some motors won’t run if they suck in smoke. Speeditwins spit when without a front cover.
March 11, 2016 at 11:13 am #33238I got the other Carb, got it on the motor and it started and didn’t spew fuel out all over the place!!! I am thinking the Jet deep inside my old Carb is wore out and letting gas go right by instead of regulating it. I will get it out and seek a replacement Jet and give it another go. I paid $30.00 for the other Carb, but well worth getting my brain straight on why that was happening.
The weather here for the next few days is going to not make it easy for me to do things with this motor.
Question: When I adjust the cable that controls the the Throttle Plate I have been lining it up all the way closed and setting the handle to Slow. Is this correct? Does anyone have any documentation on the setup of this Carb in regards to that?
