Both the Johnson TN and Gale 5D10 parts diagrams show
the same part number for the prop shaft seal, it being,
41-62 which translates to 0321788 on Marine Engine website.

The ME listing shows the seal as ID .500, OD 1.000, and thickness as .188.

Problem is, that the actual prop shaft is only .488, uniform all over.
      Thinking I knew what I needed, I ordered a CR 4985 seal,
with specs of .500 shaft, 1.000 OD, .250 thick.

The new CR seal feels way too loose, but being my shaft is .488
instead of .500, I understand why.

Question, Would the OMC seal actually be for a .488 shaft, even
though ME stated if was a .500 shaft size seal, or do I have something
      strange going on?

An older parts price book supersedes 41-62 with 307563.  My guess is that somewhere down through the ages somebody incorrectly said 0321788 supersedes 307563.

Would you be able to install a ready sleeve on the shaft?  Would that be enough to build up the diameter to .500?

Frank, your theory makes sense. I don’t find any seals on the SKF
catalog search that comes close enough to my shaft size though.
Just like a manufacturer to make an “odd ball” size you can only
            get from them.

I guess I’ll look at metric sizes next.
            Thanks!

I don’t think a person would find an over the counter
ready sleeve the right size, and too thin for my
              machining skills!

                Looks like the closest metric seal would be a 12 x 25 x 7.

The 12mm  shaft size (.472) would be about .016 smaller than
my .488 size shaft. Perhaps it would work if one can get it on
the prop shaft, it doesn’t distort too much and or burn up.

The 25mm OD is just a hair under the 1.000 I need, but
it could be shimmed or cemented in.
