Got a nice 51 Fleetwin, will run in barrel with a little tweaking, won’t stay running under load in lake. A couple of questions: 1. Is this a gravity feed fuel tank?(it’s mounted on top of the engine. The gas cap won’t tighten, its loose, seems strange to me. 2. Dying under load, what should I look at to pinpoint the problem and fix?

Any tips/info would be much appreciated.

First thing that springs to mind is low compression. It is gravity fed, and it is a good idea to clean the filter in the tank. Yeah the gas cap is more of a cork or stopper 😕 I’ve wondered about that one myself.

When it dies, what are the symptoms. Abrupt stop, or gradual faltering?

          Abrupt stop when under load.

Will clean filter in tank tomorrow and see what happens.

What is the history of the motor?

If it has been sitting for a while the whole fuel system will need a cleaning. A compression check would be the first thing to do though 😉 .

Gas cap has an o-ring around it for a snug fit in the tank. That is to say, at least it is supposed to have an o-ring around it.

Thanks for the info everyone, the gas cap does have an oring, however is must have shrunk over time b/c its not a tight fit. The motor has been in storage with the fuel emptied, I will back up and go through the fuel system, sounds like that would be the prudent thing to do at this point. Does anyone know what the compression should be on this motor?

Are you running 16 to 1 oil mix?

It needs 16:1 to last another 65 years.
