OK . HERE’S ONE FOR THE ELGIN GUYS . SAID MOTOR WILL ONLY START/RUN WITH THROTLE ADVANCE IN THE START POSITION . TRY TO ADVANCE AND MOTOR DIES . TRY TO MANUALY ADVANCE THROTTLE MOTOR DIES . WHEN RUNNING IN START POSTION MOTOR HAS ROLLING RPM’S . BEEN THROUGH IGNITION TWICE AND HAVE TRIED TWO DIFFERENT CARBS .  SAID MOTOR WAS A WEST BEND AND I’M THINKING ITS NOT A 2HP BUT MAYBE A 2.5 OR A 3 AND ITS NOT GETTING ENOUGH FUEL . ANY IDEAS

Check for fuel flow from tank.  Filter, vent, etc.

Have you tried partially blocking off carb with your thumb while running? If it’s a lean condition that would help it run better then you know where to to turn your attention too.

I agree it sounds like fuel supply.  But you say you’ve been through two carbs already.  Besides, with that adjustable high speed jet, opening it a bit should be able to supply more fuel than it needs.  That’s the reason for suggesting fuel isn’t even getting to the carb.  Just my guess.

PS., that is a Tillotson MD carb, right?

Could there be a vacuum leak between carb and reed valves?

You said you’ve run two carbs on it but I haven’t heard you say you went thru the carbs to make sure they’re clean. Like frank says you can richen the high speed some and see what that does. Have you put a timing light on the motor to see if your losing spark…just a few more things to try.

hey guys , thanks , figured it out . after reading the “points woes” i rechecked my ignition . i  had heard about the woes with the brp stuff . i had run into points problems with some other models also using genuine parts . i was using a “new brp” coil with the elgin lament’s . changed the coil again and off it went full speed .

I recall buying just a coil for mine from Discount Marine Parts several years ago and used the original laminates.
