I have a parts outboard, 1952 Gale product 250MI25-7973A,
5 hp that appears to have a neutral shift.
Does anyone have a parts diagram showing the neutral shift,
etc?
I have a complete 1953 Hiawatha 5hp that’s froze beyond hope,
but have a 1947 Gale products with a loose powerhead that
I hope to use the guts out of.
Would like to see if I could combine parts of the three and
end up with a running Hiawatha with neutral shift. Possible?
Thanks.Prepare to be boarded!
January 26, 2016 at 1:16 am #30818All of the Gale built 5hp motors were all pretty much identical, save for cosmetics. Very possible, but could not say for certain without model numbers.
January 26, 2016 at 1:48 am #30822All neutral shift Gale-built motors are clones of the Gale model 5D10. Lower unit is borrowed from a Johnson TN-xx, with slight modifications, like drive shaft.
January 26, 2016 at 3:12 am #30826Thanks for the replies and diagram! I didn’t realize Gale even had
a neutral shift outboard until I happened by one. The only external
difference I seen between the power heads on the 1947 vs. the
1953 was the magneto plate mounting. The later has the four screws
and retainer, and the prior must clamp on the power head.
In looking at the diagram, the neutral clutch seems similar to
the Merc Mk 5/6.
Perhaps it will be an interesting project.
Thanks for the help!Prepare to be boarded!
January 26, 2016 at 11:04 am #30832I belive that your ’53 has the universal style ignition, doesn’t it? That there will also make a difference on the crank too.
I had a neatral clutch model once many years back, and Frank is right. They are just like the TN Johnsons. I right now have a newly refurbished ’47 and it’s a 360 motor. That was a feature that was started way back in the early days of outboards 😉January 26, 2016 at 1:15 pm #30838https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4ufxp2fhcurs … 1YdGa?dl=0
Check this Drop Box by Garry it has a Gale section with service manuals.
January 26, 2016 at 1:38 pm #30839Actually, a lot of mfrs used that neutral clutch concept at one time or another. Martin had it on their twist shift 75. Champion used it too, for both forward and reverse. As did Mercury on their Automatic Transmission. Even the OMC electric shift outboards and Stern Drives!!!

I believe I have one TN Johnson in my
managerie, so will have to compare the
lower unit to the Gale neutral shift lower
for fun.
Am curious if neutral shift lower will mate
up with my 53 Hiawatha. Haven’t done anymore
yet than drag different "parts" to the operating
table.Prepare to be boarded!
January 31, 2016 at 2:37 am #31096I think the 5D10 lower unit with the neutral shift will bolt up okay
to my 5S10 power head, but I see the 5D10 uses the vane type
water pump impeller, part # 375-688.
I’m not getting any "hits" searching for that part number.
It’s mentioned that the Johnson TN lower unit is similar.
Does that one have the same impeller and part number?
Is it available?
Thanks!Update – Search went a whole lot better without the "-"
dash in the part number.
Found one at…….
http://www.vintageoutboard.com/products … el-tn-alsoUpdate #2 – Just found some notes in my Johnson TN folder that
Sierra 18-3001 Impeller may work if the center hub is reamed.
Can anyone confirm that?Prepare to be boarded!
January 31, 2016 at 7:24 am #31099Confirming the 5D10 and TN-xx motors use the same impeller. Also confirming that it is the same as the 5.5 – 7.5hp models, but with a smaller center hole. And yes you can ream it out and it will be just fine. It’s only around .010" too small.
The two lower units will bolt up, but the Gale has a square at the top of the drive shaft, while the TN has splines. Neutral cable is longer on the TN because it has to reach the lever on the tank.
Powerheads are totally different except for the magneto.
My 5D10 would run circles around my TN. Probably because the 5D10 would plane the boat, but the TN just couldn’t quite make it.
