Hello all.
Question: is it possible to turn a 1952 Johnson Seahorse into an electric start motor?July 12, 2021 at 1:00 pm #242638following
July 12, 2021 at 2:21 pm #242647I know that later models up to 54 could be adapted to electric start. Not sure if your earlier model has all the correct mounting bosses/bolt holes for electric start though….Perhaps Gary or Frank will chime in…
July 12, 2021 at 6:40 pm #242674Not sure, but I don’t think electric start was offered before 1954. Could be wrong though. One thing I do know, the electric start version had a special, bulging hood to make room for the starter.
July 12, 2021 at 7:33 pm #242680Thank you all for your comments, I guess I’ll hold out for the 1954 25hp RDE-16 for the Old Town. Anyone have one, looking for a strong running daily driver??
July 13, 2021 at 10:12 am #242719I was curious
I looked at 1952 parts list and a 1954 parts list
The part number for the block are the same
So would that mean that a starter bracket and flywheel from a 1954 work on a 1952?????July 13, 2021 at 12:40 pm #242737Good observation/question.
July 13, 2021 at 10:33 pm #242802The 1952 Johnson/evinrude 25hp is not capable of attaching to an electric starter. OMC first used an electric starter on the RDE-16 model in 1954. There was an aftermarket electric starter for the 1952-3 RD but it’s very crude and uncommon. Since this aftermarket starter was chain driven, the recoil has to be removed for operation, meaning that when the electric start doesn’t work, all 12 screws on those round shrouds have to come off to use the sheave pull.
Electric start was offered on some evinrude/elto motors starting in 1929-30.
You can use just the powerhead of a 1954 25hp which would give you the proper mounting holes for the electric start, but in reality its probably easiest to hold out for a 1954 RDE-16. I will add pictures tomorrow to show how/why the earlier RD motors cannot mount an electric starter..
