That ebay crank looks to be in really good condition – nice find.
I had asked around a little with out any luck. I don’t buy much used stuff of eBay but it was cheap enough that I thought it was worth the gamble. Fell lucky to get it.

I have replaced the crankshaft, and got the updated clutch cable kit. Tested the condensers and they read in the shorted scale on the Merc-O-T. Flip-flopped on using caps but I really don’t know enough, so decided to see what I could come up with as far as condensers. Ended up using condensers from the same type of ignition the coils come from. Using a sanding drum on my (1970’s) dremel, I open up the hole that they drop into a little. I no longer had a place to connect the wires so I drilled and taped a hole in the laments for a insulated plug I made from some plastic rod. Dremel’s are about my favorite tool.
Use one every day it seems!Prepare to be boarded!
January 11, 2026 at 8:15 am #303242That tip of making an insulated connection point is genius thinking outside the boathouse box! I would think the threads in the hole holds the plug in place. I am going to have to remember this one. Nice job!
January 11, 2026 at 10:53 am #303244That is one very neat clean installation Tubs! It’s going to be a real head-scratcher someday when the next guy wonders how the heck the thing works with the points and condenser grounded!

The style of condenser, for this magneto, is no longer available. Its found on other motors besides this Martin. I believe Elgin is one. While I have to admit to some showing off, my intent to offer an option that can be done with tools most would have, or can reasonably afford to buy. (Boathouse Repair) It could lead to someone posting and improvement or something completely different that is easier. Now that its done there is something I would do a little differently if I have a need to do another. Got to keep em running as long as we can. I plan to get this on You Tube sometime but I much rather be working on a motor than a computer.
