Oil or grease for the lower unit in subject outboard?
The Gale manual says everything but the 3 hp uses
oil in the L.U., but the manual covers up to 1963,
and doesn’t say what year they started using oil.
BTW, it’s the same LU as the TN Johnsons.
      Thanks!

According to one of my manuals going back to 5D11 (’55), the lower unit takes OMC type ‘B’ lubricant (which comes in a tube, it says). I’m sure some veteran on this site can relate that to a modern equivalent – I’d guess it to be in the 80-90 wt area.
In an emergency, outboard oil may me used, but the book recommends replacing it with the real stuff pronto.

Thanks retiredoz. Will have to Google "type B".

The 5D10 takes 80-90 weight outboard gear oil—replaces obsolete OMC type B. Not all models made the switch to oil in the same year.
