So I am trying to get a late 20 something guy interested in this old stuff. He inherited his grandpa’s motor and thought maybe I could help him. I thought so too at first. Ha!
So, coils were shot so I put some good used bench tested coils in there and rebuilt the carb. The motor starts and pumps a ton of water at idle. But when I increase throttle the stream of water goes from a gush to a trickle. Is this typical for this size of OMC motor? I was hoping I wouldn’t have to do the impeller because I don’t want to pull the powerhead. I’m assuming the vanes are letting too much water “escape” at higher rpms?
Another issue is the recoil. One of the pawls was rubbing on the flywheel ratchet. NOISY!! From the pictures it looks like the little springs might be sprung? Those springs are confusing/counterintuitive. It seems they are pulling the opposite of what they shoot be? Anyway, the pawls don’t seem to come out smoothly and crisply. Any advice there? White lithium grease? You can see the rub marks in the picture. At some point there must have been other rubbing, etc. Look at the top of the recoil. I don’t believe that homemade rubber bushing should be there should it?
Finally, I’m concerned about the exhaust cover discoloration. I know it’s normal on some models. Is the CD one of them? That bastard got hot too when I ran it. Looks like it’s missing a screw and leaking some oil?
Also when I disconnected my tank, it ran for another 10-15 seconds then died like normal but the glass fuel bowl is still full of gas? They are usually dry after disconnection aren’t they?
Well, lots of questions. I appreciate all the advice, etc

Also, tbe compression numbers are:
Top 70 psi
Bottom 75 psi
It idles well.-

November 8, 2021 at 6:18 pm #2493701. Don’t know what to advise about the impeller. If it is old, I’d replace it.
2. One of the pawl springs are wonky. They are installed correctly. They pull the pawls into engagement with the ratchet when you pull the rope. I suspect the equalizer ring is not installed correctly. Nobody does it right the first time they try. And what’s with the stuff on top?
3. The paint burned off of those exhaust covers within the first 5 minutes out of the box when new. There is fire on the inside. And did they STINK as it did! Yeah, there’s a screw missing.
4. Looks like the sintered filter element is missing. I wouldn’t worry about it if the tank is clean and the screen inside the tank is intact. Yeah, something to ponder about concerning the empty bowl. They will be empty when running, if the filter is in there. Don’t try to explain, they just do.
5. Compression sounds good. Paint is good on the cylinder head, indicating it hasn’t been fried.I call it a keeper.
November 8, 2021 at 7:58 pm #249392Thanks Frank. Yeah, I think that “situation” on the top must be a clue that says it’s been apart before. I will look at the parts catalog and big manual and go through it.
Thanks for the info!

Mine is white. It’s a hard copy. Is the red one you’re talking about on this site for viewing/download? That would come in handy for when my book is out of reach.

Frank, the sintered fuel filter is in there. Not sure why it’s not visible in that pic.
