1954 Evinrude will not stay running.Has complete new ignition.New carb kit all new fuel and vacum lines. Will start run and smoke does not matter where needle valves are set.Revs up and dies out.If I push primer on fuel tank it will keep running.Have tried 3 different pressure tanks that I know work well. When I open cap to check for pressure there is none.Have taken intake apart all is good and clean and reed valves look like new. Gasket is also good.Took off and cleaned all I could behind intake.Connector on motor is clear have also changed it. Smoke is thick when I try to adj needle valve.Do not know what to try next…….
June 21, 2021 at 7:32 pm #240851Out of my area of expertise, but could the air and fuel line on the connector on the motor side be swapped around?
Just a thought.
Respectfully,
BrookJune 21, 2021 at 7:37 pm #240852I am GUESSING at your trouble, Russ. My GUESS is that air pressure, or air flow, may NOT be making the trip into the fuel tank. If I am correct, there would be insufficient air pressure in the tank to force fuel thru’ the hose, and into the carb. (Now then, if fuel is NOT being delivered, the motor will rev up, and die as the fuel LEANS OUT). AND, you mentioned that when you push the primer button several times on the tank, the motor will continue to run. (This fact supports my theory about pressure not making the trip to the tank). Furthermore, you said that you tried two tanks that work properly, and experienced the same-disappointing results. Lets assume that my theory is correct; The pressure system on the powerhead is not functioning as it should. Well, I do NOT know how the powerhead produces that pressure. I intend to research the pressure system, and learn just how it operates. I’ll get back to you with my findings.
June 21, 2021 at 7:41 pm #240854Sounds like for whatever reason the motor is not pumping air to your fuel tank.
Prepare to be boarded!
June 21, 2021 at 7:43 pm #240856Are the intake covers on tight? I had a similar prob with a ’57 AD-11 and found the intake cover screws were only finger tight, despite appearing to have unbroken original paint on them. I put gasket sealer on and retightened all the screws and it ran well and had an audible hiss when I cracked open the gas tank after shutting it down. NABMD
June 21, 2021 at 8:03 pm #2408573 tanks no air pressure !!! seems like engine air problem possible bad check valves behind the carb plate
heavy smoke may be due to plugged/inoperative purge valve
did you inspect them ??

June 22, 2021 at 6:31 am #240893Thanks everyone. Will remove intake and check everything again. Also will remove filter.Have to pull power head previous owner said he changed impeller but it is leaking from base.Russ.
June 22, 2021 at 7:48 am #240894Careful what you hear and believe from any PO, it’s pretty rare you can trust the accuracy of their memory. Assume any PO is less of a mechanic and is more forgetful and lazier than you are. Just sayin’…..
