Thanks Steve, it sounds like mine is probably okay
as it sits. I’ll see how it does (hopefully today)
now that I have the high speed needle tight,
and a skinny little 7/16" wrench "in the boat"
      if need be, lol.

… I bent out the four spring mount clips
a little, which made the cowl clamps a little tighter.
Hope to get it back on the lake tomorrow for another go.

I recall we talked about that fix on an earlier thread. That fix worked for my 54′ Fleetwin cowl rattle. Those mounts can rattle within themselves with metal to metal contact. Bending them out should correct it if that’s the problem.

I looked at the motor mounting on my boat this morning.
To get the center line of the motor "square" with the bottom
of the boat, as in Steve’s photo, I had to move the tilt pin
          up one notch.
Seeing how the motor won’t plane the boat and hence the bow
rides up in the air, am I making matters worse by raising
the tilt pin a notch? Or will the new geometry make it
want to come closer to planning, and bow down lower?
I put a 50 – 60 pound sand bag in the bow this morning,
so I probably won’t know the real results unless I take it out.
I also raised the motor up 1/4" as the anti-cav plate was
close to two inches below the bottom of the boat.
I can’t go any higher than that, so it’ll have to do.
Didn’t get to test run it today, so I’ll be trying it out
          on fishing opener tomorrow!

Buc, I also had my tilt pin out one notch on the 59 Fisherman on my boat. That’s usually where I run them. I dont think it will make matters worse. Having the A/V plate parallel to the bottom of the boat should be nearly ideal. Mine is just less than 2" below the bottom of the boat also. The ballast bag in the bow will help a lot. My boat will plane off that way with most of my 5.5s and no problem at all with a 7.5. I’ll be looking for your report back when you get a chance to run it.

              bBuc,

Your comment about the sandbag makes me nervous. I use a 6 gallon water jug for ballast. The water has a neutral buoyancy in case of an upset. The sand does not and may compound an otherwise bad situation.

David, I’m not sure I understand the difference between having
a 60 pound sandbag or my 140 pound son riding in the front
of the boat, other than that, a person may be able to
shift their weight in case of an upset to help correct
to boat, or they may go "flying out"!
Looks like a nice calm day, so think I’ll be okay for
                this trial run.

UPDATE: Took the boat out fishing this morning.
Motor ran great, but I had to tweak the packing
nuts on both needles a little more.
The sand bag in the bow worked great, except
when it was time to load the boat back up on
                the trailer!
Good fishing day…. caught nine fish and
don’t have to clean any! Four little northerns,
four bass, one bluegill. Three of the bass were
big enough, but that season isn’t open yet.
