Hello all,
I am new here, and thought this would be a good place to start searching out a working Johnson RDE-16 in daily driver condition to be mounted on the transom of a 1952 15ft Old Town (attached).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.July 7, 2021 at 3:22 pm #242175I’m working on one right now. 1953 25 hp Johnson.
Go through the ignition, it’s a magneto. Probably needs coils, condensers for sure and either clean the points or replace. Wires and plugs too. Then impellar and change the lower gear oil. They are very stylish motors.
July 7, 2021 at 3:49 pm #242179I currently have 2 working 1957 electric start 35HP Johnsons however, they seem big on that boat. Will you be selling your 25HP when finished working on it?
July 7, 2021 at 3:53 pm #242180It’s going on my Sea Nymph 14R. I fish lake St. Clair and I need to cover some water.
July 7, 2021 at 3:57 pm #242181Well that will for sure help you cover some water. Hows the old saying go…, 90% of the fish are in 10% of the lake?
Please keep me in mind if you stumble across another one.1 user thanked author for this post.
July 7, 2021 at 4:21 pm #242184For what its worth
I will have 1955 25 hp RDE-17 (electric start) ready at the end of winter
If you want to exchange phone numbers-private message meJuly 7, 2021 at 4:24 pm #242185OK, well first start slowly….You really want to be sure you have something solid to work with before investing money and time only to find out the powerhead/gearcase is worn out/NG….
Start with a compression test, this thing might be difficult to rope over without an electric starter, please make sure it is mounted on something solid, like the boat’s transom…Look at the paint on the cylinder head/block, does it appear burnt/badly discolored? If so, the engine has been overheated at some point in its life…
Next, drain the gear lube, there are two large fill/drain screws that must be removed, one might be hidden under the forward part of the gearcase bullet. Do NOT remove the small phillips screw, if one is present. This is the shift linkage cradle retainer screw, the linkage will fall down into the gearcase and you will be screwed…
In any event, have a look at what drains out….Old lube was dark in color, so this is normal
Newer lubes are a light brown/tan color…
“Milky colored” lube indicates there is water mixed with the gear lube
Raw water draining out spells trouble
If nothing drains out at all, you are in big trouble. Look for a crack in the skeg, freeze damage.
Have a close look at the whole engine, look for parts/pieces that might be missing, or broken/bent castings…July 7, 2021 at 4:56 pm #242186That is absolutely great advice…, and yes, I will be sure to ask questions like that before committing to a purchase.
Than you…July 12, 2021 at 10:43 pm #242698That’s a beautiful Old Town! Nice Maine-made boat. Got more photos to share? Your 35 would not be too much for it while you are waiting for a 25 to show up.
