I have a 1955 1.7hp Neptune, and the coil is junk. (it’s falling apart disintegrating) Can anyone tell me where I can see about getting a replacement or what I can use from something more modern to replace it? I was told of a place called Standard out of IL where a person got some but I haven’t been able to find the company.
Is there any way to change it over to electronic ignition?
June 1, 2025 at 9:22 am #296924Call Standard Magneto sales. 1-773-235-2010. Maybe they can help. If they do not have a direct listing, they will need to know the measurements of: 1- the steel laminate square or rectangle protruding through the center of the coil (1/2” x 9/16” or 9/16” x 9/16” as examples.
2- diameter of coil.
3- length of square or rectangle part of coil the goes over steel laminate.
4- manufacturer of magneto assembly (Wico or Eismann or Phelan as examples. The magneto plate should have the name embossed on it somewhere. If there is also a service number stamped into the plate, write the number down.
you can also email or text a picture to them.

June 1, 2025 at 11:28 am #296928With some effort, you can replace it with the common, & inexpensive, OMC style coil.

June 4, 2025 at 3:45 pm #297049Thank you very much sir! I will have to give this a try! Could you recommend a make and model of a year of motor that would have a small coil? the one in my 55 is very small. I have a coil from a 66 Evinrude 6hp but the coil is to big in width. Thank you
June 4, 2025 at 4:49 pm #297052The OMC coil swap may not work. You need to measure the depth of the coil. The OMC may be too deep. I tried it on a 1939 Neptune 1.5 hp and it did not work. The original coil was a Wico setup with a 1” depth tube and OMC was about 1-1/4” deep. I contacted Standard Magneto Sales with no luck but Doug Penn set me up with coils I could use for the 2 motors I have. I had to swap the coils from the new laminates to my old ones.

June 4, 2025 at 10:26 pm #297068The coil I used in the early single cylinder magneto pictured, is what you have. Its found in the OMC universal magneto. I used an older brown one I had laying around. If you decide to try it, it should just fit notching out the laminates for the wires. You will also have to remove the part of the coil the plug wire slips into and solder the plug wire on. A couple coats of liquid tape is recommended. Without a picture of what you have its difficult to provide you with the best information so you will need to do some discovery on your own.

June 5, 2025 at 3:01 pm #297089Hi Tubbs. thank you for your help and the information. here is the size of the coil I have. it just might be trial and error. The OMC is rather large, and the spark plug wire spike is in a odd spot for my set up.
June 5, 2025 at 3:03 pm #297092Thats my issue too, my coil is actually really small, and the OMC coil alone is to big, and where the spark plug wire spike is on the OMC is in a bad spot, my coil the wire is almost on the very top, not sticking out the side. Trial and error I guess.. Thank you for the information
