      Is engine level?

Hi James.  Your Johnson 15 should be a 1956 model FD-10, the only year Johnson made the 15 before upping it to 18 horse in ’57.

This carb has two small holes on the body itself, on the choke side.  The top one is an air bleed for the idle circuit and goes straight in horizontally. The one slightly forward and below it goes in at an angle, about 45°, and is the bowl vent. Is the fuel coming out of either of these two holes?

The air silencer fastens to the front of the carb and any fuel dripping out of here would be cosidered normal after choking. Fuel dripping out the rear of the carb where it fastens to the motor would indicate a damaged or missing gasket.

Was the sediment bowl gasket replaced during the rebuild? They tend to leak as they get brittle and cracked with age but aren’t included with the OMC/BRP 439071 carb kit required for this motor and must be purchased separately, P/N 303122.

NOTE:  Rope start motors have the sediment bowl on the bottom of the carb bowl while electric start models have the sediment bowl mounted remotely on the port side of the motor.

          AHA, somebody finally asked.

The choke is supposed to “flood” the carburetor.  That is what it is there for.  If motor is not reasonably level, the gas can run forward instead of aft-ward into the intake manifold.

Ok that’s what I need to know motor is tilted back and I thought that might be why gas  comes out back of carb.

No fuel coming out of two holes.fuel only come out of carb where air silencer fastens to carb when you choke carb and pull starter with choke open. This carb is off a 18 hp no sediment bowl, all gaskets are new total carb was rebuilt.one question I have is the low speed needle the long one or the short one which one gos on top and bottom just want to make sure I have them right thank you.

Low speed needle is the short one on top.

The more I read this thread, the more I am confused. It seems like what you are calling the back, is what everybody else would call the front. In my book, the FRONT is where the air silencer goes. The back is where it attaches to the intake manifold. So, when you say, “fuel comes out the back of the carb,” are you talking about the air silencer end or the intake manifold end??

                  Long live American manufacturing!

Yes gas runs out the front, did the 1956 come out with two line or pulse pump ?
