Okay, now we have information we can understand. So after choking, gas comes out the FRONT of the carb. Like Frank said, that’s to be expected. If the engine is lean-spitting after it starts, gas will still kind of blow back out. Where do you have your high and low speed mixture adjustments pre-set? On my 15s and 18s, I usually start with both needles lightly seated, closed. Then I back out the top, low speed one about 1 1/2 turns and the bottom, high speed one, about 3/4 turn. This usually will result in a too rich, but easy-to-start, condition, that may run roughly but NOT sneeze back, and no gas to speak of, should come out.
Long live American manufacturing!

Thank you. Great information. Now I know why my RD18s (1956 30 HP) tend to drip gas from the carb when the motor is tipped up after running. Especially as the RD18s are shut off from idle by choking.
October 13, 2022 at 11:40 am #267564you can always kill it with an external stop switch (button) hooked into the points… shorting the points may held reduce excess fuel drips from choking/tilting

October 14, 2022 at 5:56 am #267599Not trying to “muddy the waters” here. Is the engine running on both cylinders? If not, perhaps fuel is being blown back out the front of the carb because one of the reed valves is broken/stuck open slightly. Like everyone has said, some of this drooling is to be expected on a normal running engine. It is hard to know without actually seeing what is going on. I don’t want you to go crazy over something that is somewhat normal.
I guess I would start with figuring out why the engine is running poorly, this might just solve the drooling issue
October 14, 2022 at 8:21 pm #267654Wouldn’t a bad head gasket also cause some gas spitting out of front of carb ?
October 14, 2022 at 8:34 pm #267655gas spurting up front can only come from a carb overflow or spit back due to bad reeds but yours being more liquid than vapor I would suspect the carb … cyl head is to far away to cause the problem … imho anyway .

October 15, 2022 at 8:14 am #267665Well, anything that effects how the crankcase charges flow could create a situation like this. Like I say, I seem to be reading that the engine doesn’t run correctly, irregardless of the drooling issue. I would troubleshoot the running issue, then worry about carb drooling. Forgive me, I have not kept up on this thread very well, so disregard this if I have missed something.
Once again, it is not that uncommon for the carb to “drool” just a bit when attempting to start. I’m not there, not seeing what you see, so don’t know for sure. Just don’t want you going nuts trying to fix something that might not be broken. D
October 15, 2022 at 12:33 pm #267685I have a 15 hp jhonson rebuilt carburetor when I choke carb give a couple of pulls it fires . Pull open choke gas runs out of carb. It did the same thing before rebuild of carb . Motor sneezes when it fires or barely runs . I know carb is right any ideas. Thanks
Sneezes and dies shortly after it starts? Spits fuel out the carb?
Both are signs of a lean fuel mix or broken or dirty petal on the reed valves. Might want to pull the carb again and take a close look at them using a small flashlight. Better yet, remove the reed plate completely for a closer inspection to check for broken petals or dirt holding one open. It’s also a good idea to have new gaskets on hand first, just in case.
If the carb is adjusted correctly, leaking crankshaft seals can cause a lean mix by allowing air into the crankcase.
