I just started fooling around with this motor, I was able to get it to run, but I’m unsure about cooling. I saw a youtube video of a slightly older one that had a cooling tell tale around the exhaust manifold, but I don’t think this engine does. Felt like the motor was heating up pretty quickly. I had a few questions though:
1) To pull the lower unit, is it the single screw below the cavitation plate? I’m assuming this will lead me to the impeller
2) As a sign of pumping water, is there a tell tale or am I just looking for water coming out of the exhaust holes on the front of the downshift?
3) I just saw on the Elgin website that these used grease in the lower units, is that the best way to go or can use a 90wt lower unit lube? This is what I use on most of my motors and actually what this currently has in it.
4) Does anybody know the factor setting for the carb needles?Thanks in advance. I’ve been trying to pull the flywheel on this, but can’t get it off. I gave up for now but luckily she started up, so I guess the coils and points are ok for now, but I’ve never had this much trouble trying to get a flywheel off.
April 27, 2016 at 11:26 am #35560If your motor has an aluminum tank there are two tell tales, one on the exhaust cover and the other out the exhaust relief in the leg.
Again assuming an aluminum tank the lower unit is dropped by the nut under the cav plate and one under the window just above the cav plate. typical needle settings to start are 3/4 turn each final running positions are around 1/2 turn each.Its likely the impeller is shot. flyingscott91@yahoo.comApril 27, 2016 at 11:34 am #35561The one on the exhaust cover is actually a deliberate gasket leak. There is a small section of gasket cut away. Hard to see, unless water is squirting out.
April 27, 2016 at 12:26 pm #35563By the window just above the cavitation plate do you mean the piece of metal that I believe covers the shift mechanism? I was looking at that, does it just pop out? Don’t want to break, I notice that piece missing when I come across many old elgins.
April 27, 2016 at 1:21 pm #35567Yes, that is the cover. And yes, it just snaps in and out. You will find a nut behind it. There is also a special washer under the nut. Don’t lose it.
April 28, 2016 at 9:12 am #35618How about lower unit lubrication, 90 wt lube or grease? I’m not a fan of grease in these applications because it’s not as easy to change, especially since some water intrusion is probably guaranteed. Before I saw the recommendation on the Elgin website to use grease I had filled mine with 90wt OMC lube.
April 28, 2016 at 10:30 am #35621That motor needs grease. 90 wt. oil will leak out. I prefer John Deere Corn Head grease over Lubriplate assembly lube grease, myself. The Corn Head stuff is very good and will cling better to gears that are turning rapidly inside the gear housing. I just hold the grease gun over the opening and pump it full until it comes out the top vent plug, or you can get a rubber tipped adapter that sticks over the end of your grease gun. One big tube will do several motors and is cheaper in price compared to the Lubriplate. It’s available at any John Deere dealer, or at least they can order some for you.
Once you get your Elgin running, it will likely be one of your favorite motors. They are very good runners with lots of power. Be sure to mix some good TCW 3 outboard oil at 16/1 ratio when your’e ready to run it.April 28, 2016 at 12:20 pm #35623Thanks, I’ll give it a try.

Says 1 turn on both carb screws. I have two of the ’54 models, and one turned into a parts motor because despite the help from this forum, I never could get the flywheel off. It also had carb issues. I lucked out with my impellorMay 15, 2016 at 1:59 am #36566Pulled my lower unit to check the impeller, and sure enough it’s shot. But I encountered two other things. The first is a large washer that sits below the impeller. I can take a picture if needed. Anyway, mine was split in two. Obviously a piece that I will need to source out, but I’m not sure what it’s proper identification is. The second question I have is whether or not there is a gasket below this piece where it sits on the lower unit over the drive shaft.
