I have a 1955 3 HP motor that I need both cowlings for. I picked up cowlings at a swap meet that I thought would fit but the choke and the two carb needles don’t line up in the cover holes. The part numbers inside the two covers are 203197 and 203198. If anyone has a 1955 3 HP motor I would really appreciate it if you could check the casting numbers inside each cowling and let me know what they are. I either have the wrong cowlings or the wrong carburetor.

Those part numbers don’t seem to be correct for cowling parts. One comes back as a nut and the other comes back as a reverse-lock part.

Maybe someone will post a parts manual for your engine.

Is your Evinrude a model 3014?? There should be an ID plate with a model number and serial number.

Thanks for your reply, seakaye12. I typed in the wrong casting numbers in my original post. I have since corrected them. My motor is a 3014 and I have a parts manual for my 1955 3 HP Evinrude. The part numbers in the 1955 manual are 277192 starboard cover and 277193 for the port cover. I have learned that the casting numbers are different from the part numbers. This is why I am looking for someone that has a 1955 3 HP Evinrude that would be willing to remove at least one of their covers and let me know what casting number is on their cover.

I understand now. What you might try is to run an ad here in the classifieds section. There are members and guests who read those and not here….and vice-versa. Can’t hurt; it’s free
            .
            .
Also there are a few people on youtube running their 1955 3HP Evinrudes. You could try contacting them to see if any of them still had their engines and whether or not they would be willing to have a look for you.

Your present cowling fits except for the carb control openings? Have you compared your carb to the illustrations and part numbers in your parts manual?.

I’m guessing somebody has tried to soup it up with a different carburetor. Got any pictures?

I just looked at cowlings off a ’59 or so that have the same casting numbers. I’m pretty sure the cowlings on the Lightwins were the same up until ’62 or so when the holes for the fixed hi-speed needle went away. The part numbers will vary from one year to the next, because of engineer-speak, the cowling and decals constitute an assembly. So if your carb doesn’t want to fit, I’m with Frank. Likely mismatch.

Thanks for your responses and you may be correct about having the wrong carb but I would still like to eliminate the possibility of the wrong cowlings by someone with a 1955 3 HP Evinrude checking the casting numbers on their covers.

Would it help if I told you the ’53 Lightwin cowls are still the same number ?

These are the front decals from a decal sight.
All years look to be the same. The 1960 & 61
samples are motors I have. This would seem to
indicate the location of the choke and the mixture
screws are the same on these years.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
