I want to thank everyone that contributed to this thread. I am now convinced that I have the correct cowlings. I must have the wrong carburetor. I did some research using my various parts manuals and I have noticed that based on the part numbers of the upper carburetor body 1954 through 1956 the part number is 375973. Starting in 1957 through 1962 the upper carburetor body part number changed to 376978. I must have the later carb on my 1955 motor.

September 30, 2021 at 12:16 pm #247516I removed the carb on my motor and it has a casting number on it that is different than the part number in the parts manual. The parts manual for 1955 lists it as a 375973 but the casting number on the carb is 302990. So, like the cowlings, the carburetor part number is different than the number cast into the part. Russ or anyone else that has a 3 HP carb off a 1952 through 1956 3 HP Evinrude, if you would share the casting number with me it would be helpful and I would appreciate it. Attached is a picture of my carburetor showing the casting number 302990.

Or the mounting plate is bent or out
of alignment on the power head.

September 30, 2021 at 7:44 pm #247556Keep in mind that cowling positioning is controlled by that center ring…Center ring positioning is controlled by the rigid mounts on the head and the aluminum bracket that is mounted to the crankcase….This bracket is often bent, which can affect cowl positioning a great deal…
October 3, 2021 at 10:06 pm #247645After spending all morning switching parts between my 1958 3 HP motor and this problematic 1955 3 HP motor I solved the problem. The Boat House was correct. The forward fuel tank mounting plate needed to be bent back into shape. After doing that everything has lined up properly.
Thanks again to everyone that contributed their time and help in letting me solve this problem.

You lucked out there. There is better than a
50/50 chance that aluminum will break when
trying to bend it back to its original position.
