Any ideas from the professionals would be fantastic thanks in advance

There is an O-ring on the shift lever that could be worn out or missing, allowing leakage. The hole where the shift lever goes through sometimes also gets worn/wallowed out with age, allowing leakage. You are seeing exhaust water and unburned fuel/oil mix seeping out of the hole.

Over the long haul, it will wear faster because of the water “lubrication” instead of grease. Other than that, no problem. Keep it greased and run it. On the other hand, how about the water pump? Any plans to replace the impeller? The powerhead has to come off for either job, so you might as well fix both at the same time.

If you are pulling the powerhead to service the water pump, that would be the time to repair the leaking and worn shifter.

To do it, I drill out the exhaust housing to accept a short piece of brass tubing which I get from a hobby store. The tube is then epoxied into the housing and a new O ring with some water proof grease solves the problem.

Depending on the wear, sometimes the leak is just caused by an old shrunken shifter o-ring. The problem can be solved by just cleaning, greasing the chase, o-ring replacement, and a shot of grease in the shifter fitting.

If the shift handle has a lot of play, then Mumbles solution is the way to go.
