      Hello
Working on a 55 Evinrude 15014 Fastwin and have a question regarding gasket #303892 powerhead to tower. This gasket is NLA, however it is replaced by #377070 which contains two gaskets now and a baffle. After installing this and tank testing I’m getting good water flow, but I’m also getting water flow out of the the shifter base as well as the upper drain holes on the tower. It isn’t just dribbling out it is spraying out.I’m also noticing it leaking at the base gasket. Everything is tight and I used 3M 847. The only answer I can come up with is the baffle is causing pressure as it pumped water fine with no leaks before this replacement. I’m wondering if I shouldn’t have used the baffle and just went with the one gasket? Thanks Ken

The baffle was added to keep water and exhaust away from the lower crankshaft seal area. I guess one could debate how effective it was. Anyhoo, lots of motors were converted to use it without problems such as you describe. I’m not even sure I understand where you say it is spraying. If you mean the shifter shaft that goes through the housing, there is an o-ring seal around it. But if the hole is all wallowed out, the shaft will be sloppy and the o-ring won’t do much good. As for the upper drain holes, I don’t understand what holes you are speaking of.

For whatever good it might do, I would keep the baffle. That seal was a serious problem area.

          Ken,

Remind me next meet to bring you a handful of the o rings for the shifter! Whenever a powerhead comes off, I change them. Don’t think Ive ever found one not dry rotted by now.

Strange that it just started leaking now, but who knows>? Perhaps fresh grease will slow that down.

Not sure what drain holes you are referring to either at the top of the housing?

Are these factory? I have seen a few "tell tale" holes drilled by owners there, to give them a visual that the water is pumping. Again though, not sure which ones you mean. Can you email me a pic?

Actually, the hole I am referring to is where the upper water tube grommet is. (I replaced the grommet). I originally thought I didn’t get the water tube into the grommet but that wouldn’t explain why I still get a good water flow to the powerhead. Water is coming out of the shift shaft as Frank noted so I will try a new O ring there. I guess it’s back to the drawing board on this one and pull the powerhead yet again. Thanks Ken

With a new grommet, it shouldn’t be leaking there. I would suspect it may have gotten damaged as you inserted the tube, or possibly there is damage to the casting. Minor leakage there won’t actually hurt anything other than looking bad. Of course as you suggest, gross leakage is water that doesn’t make it to the powerhead and doesn’t do its intended job.

                Boy, that is strange.

Is the "tab" for the grommet in the hole, locking it in? and water still coming out?
