Hello, I have a RD17 that runs great but suddenly have an issue. While run the motor last night 3/4 throttle in forward hear it began to slip. Stays in gear but as I accelerate it slips and will only get up to around 5-6 mph. Any ideas here, I am thinking maybe a work clutch dog or something in the lower unit. If I hold the flywheel I can rotate the prop counter clockwise in forward gear. It takes some pressure but it will rotate slowly. I can hear or feel any clunking it feels smooth but certainly not locked to the drive shaft as it should be.

      Thank you, Nick

        .

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

A worn clutch dog will produce a grinding noise if slipping that badly.  However, a slipping prop hub will be smooth, like spinning your wheels in snow or mud.

After removing the prop, mark it with a Sharpie across the hub and on the prop itself.  After running the motor for a bit, remove the prop and see if the marks are still lined up. If they aren’t, you’ll know that the rubber hub in the prop is slipping and needs repair. This method only works for props equipped with a rubber hub. If your prop is solid and slips, it could be the shear pin has done its job or something inside the gearcase is wrong.

              Here’s what crosbyman means.

Nick, Please explain what a “work clutch dog” is. Also, propellers are not attached to the drive shaft. They are attached to the propeller shaft.

Followed the instructions and sure enough the prop is slipping on the rubber hub. Is there a way to fix this or do I need to replace the prop.

Thank you for all the replies I appreciate it.

some prop shops can repair  it but….  it is old and they may or may not have  what it takes.

                        ask around

seems I saw  a solution some time ago …drill a hole  (off center) across the prop body and hub and  insert a pin  or  screw to lock hub and prop together.   2 likely need to balance the prop !

change the propeller shaft  drive pin for a brass  pin   because you will no longer have  hub slipping to protect the  prop shaft and gears
