I have had a copy of Garry’s knowledge that he placed on a CD. I have looked thru it over and over, even looking at an actual, not copy, 10 Edition Service manual. I have found the wiring diagram for the RDE-17, and it shows the location for the Mercury safety switch attached to a "Speed control pulley" .
This part along with the rest of that system is not present on this motor.

Note: I explained that I had original started with an RD17 with is manual start, but the RDE comes with all the other fancy stuff, you know electric starter and all that jazz.

So the big question is. How can I install this safety device without those parts to ensure the owners get what they deserve?

I do not believe it is an absolute necessity, but if I can put it on with it functioning then I will do it.

Also Garry, do you or anyone else have a correct color coded wiring diagram? I have the diagram in the book but it is not colored.
Trying to make this as right as possible.

      Thanks

        Richard,

I have started putting wiring diagrams up on my site. I keep adding more as I have time.

Can you post a picture of what you are dealing with? Perhaps simply put a mercury switch from a later model RD on it.

"Speed Control Pulley" would refer to pre-1955 models with the cable throttle. Your 1955 uses gears on the throttle. This page is from the Gale service manual. Same thing goes for your Johnson. It takes the single mercury switch, not the double one.
