I have a 25hp Johnson that is on a wooden boat I just restored and when I was cleaning it up to restore I noticed a discolored section on both sides of the motor below the power head. It’s located around the exhaust port. While looking at it I noticed cracks on both sides. Is this motor any good? I’ve attached photos of both sides.

not good… try a welding shop to do some spot welding if at all possible.

That’s only going to get worse. I’d look for a parts motor.

                    discussion on similar cracks: https://www.aomci.org/forums/topic/rd-17-and-rd-18-exhaust-leg-cracks/

I think I would just run the motor and check the crack from time to time.

Yes, this syndrome has been discussed before…I’m assuming the powerhead is the normal color and has not been overheated…. I’m pretty sure there are some modifications that should be made to the powerhead so more cooling water sprays in that area…

Power head looks fine. Took inspection plates off cylinders and all looks really good. Thanks
