I have a 1955 Mercury Mark 55e (serial #899466) and the starter motor will spin, but it will not flip over and engage with the flywheel. Does anyone know why this might be happening. Alternatively, does anyone know where I might get a new starter?
starter needs servicing. not spinning fast enough. good luck on getting another let alone a new starter. it can be changed ti a delco starter by changing the flywheel and starter more reliable. they were a problem even when new. the battery must be tip top.
Dave, Can you give me some details on a Delco starter and where I would find the right flywheel? Do you know of anyone who could service this starter? Thanks for your prompt response.
One thing to make sure is that the bendix is able to move freely. Take off the starter pinion gear and clean the bendix with card cleaner. Re lubricate with graphite powder. I have had a few of the mercs that were gummed up causing the gear not to jump up even if starter was spinning fast enough.
Long shot but might get lucky. I have had a local old school shop rebuild some for about 100 but it was hard to find them
