I have had several scotts with your gearcase. The noise typically comes from the meshing of the large prop-shaft gear with the 2 mounted on the drive shaft.
THe simplest solution that has worked for me is t o run it full speed in forward for a while. That may be all it needs. If that doesnt work you can install a second gasket for the gearcase cap. The originals were made in 2 thicknesses.

Can’t remember exactly (crs) . I have 4 of the "blue egg" 5hp motors here that were acquired from different sources. Here is a shot of the top of the driveshaft. Something stopped abruptly. Maybe not freeze damage after all.

Not to hijack this thread, but I got one runner out of the 4, and would have a possible second runner if impellers were cheap.

What I didn’t notice when I got the runner going was that it had the wrong prop 😳 . When I put it in forward on its sea trial, it went backwards because the prop was for a direct drive motor.I didn’t run it for long as it lugged too 🙄 .

I think Laings has gaskets for these motors http://www.laingsoutboards.com/

I’m a bit embarrassed to admit this, but when I checked the lower unit, there was about 3 or 4 ounces of water, and no oil. I filled the lower with lubriplate, and, weather permitting, will start it again tomorrow. 😳 😳

That driveshaft looks like a pleated skirt doing the twist!!!!!!!
