bought a small boat it came with a 3 hp sea horse, doesn’t appear to have reverse, recoil was all tangled up,got that working, gas tank was empty but looks cleanish,a litte dry dust ,not sure when it last ran ,wasn’t going use it,but i see it could be collectable ,was going clean the tank and let it rip, this old engine is alot different then any i have seen,i was looking where to plug the tank in for a few miutes, before i figured out it was built in,seems to have good compression, main question what fuel mix 24 to one?and i don’t see any reverse

360 degree steering is “reverse” 16:1 or 24:1 depending on which factory literature you are looking at.

16:1, ignore all the hype about “today’s oils being better so 24:1 can be used”, even if it is “factory hype”.

Those are sweet, smooth, runners. Like all Johnson/Evinrudes of that era, if it has original magneto coils, they will be bad, but replacements are available for about $25 each. They are popular today for use on canoes. Weight without gas is only about 35 pounds. I run mine at 20 to 1 gas oil, just because it’s easy to mix by dumping a quart of oil in a 5 gallon can of gas.

Get it running and treat it right, and it will outlast you. Those motors have bushing and not bearings like newer motors, so use the recommended oil mix.
