I have a 1956-158 Johnson 35 hp motor built in Peterborough Canada. When the motor has been sitting for any length of time, it is very difficult to start. Once I get it started, it starts like a charm after that.
It is frustrating though that it takes so long to start even with the choke applied.
Any suggestions on tuning the motor up or rectifying this issue?
Thanks
Dan McKean

September 9, 2021 at 12:27 pm #246412Have you checked the coils?
September 9, 2021 at 3:46 pm #246419Well, it runs well once started…Does it start OK hot? Perhaps the choke linkage is messed up and not closing properly. Are you advancing the throttle enough?
September 9, 2021 at 3:52 pm #246420Hi and thank you for your quick response! I don’ think the carb has been rebuilt. I will keep an eye on the choke plate.
I have only owned the boat for three weeks and just got the electrical fixed so now I am able to start the motor now from the ignition switch
Thanks again!
September 9, 2021 at 3:54 pm #246421Hi and thank you very much for responding so quick!
I’m a newbie to old motors so what and where are the coils?
September 9, 2021 at 3:56 pm #246422when it starts it is not hot. I just takes a very long time for it to start after it has been sitting.
I will check the choke linkage
Thanks again!

Coils are under the flywheel (Flywheel must be removed for access).
ALL 1956-58 OMC twins have bad (cracked) coils unless they have already been replaced. They would be the first place I’d look if starting on such a motor because it won’t run worth a hoot if they are bad.. Don’t know what “got electrical fixed” includes. Perhaps it is taken care of.
September 9, 2021 at 4:30 pm #246427Thanks for that advice, I will check the coils.
Oh and the electrical issue was with the solenoid and I fixed that myself.
thanks again for replying!
September 9, 2021 at 4:37 pm #246428Dan MCKean as a member of aomci you are allowed to download yourself a copy of the Johnson maintenance manual for your engine. The book is basically good for the twins Evinrude and Johnson and cover oldies from early 50 to late 60

GO down below the series of pictures and find the JOHNSON RED BOOK
download to a PDF file on your computer and print a copy (local print shops can copy 2 sided and spring bind the book with a plastic cover sheet front and back for a few bucks)
if you do not know where coils are you need to read that book urgently…:-)
