The top crankshaft bearing has the crankshaft seal pressed into the top of the bearing.  I am concerned that rust on the crankshaft surface would destroy a new seal and maybe wet the magneto with fuel.   The seal rubs on the shaft near the taper.  Maybe this rust is par for the course and I should just put in the new seal and put things together.

I would like someone with experience on these motors to give their opinion whether I should be looking for a new crankshaft.   Please see attached photos.  Thank you.

I wonder why it is rusted there.  There should not be water there.  Anyhoo, it looks like the rust is above the seal wipe area.  Unless there  is something I’m not seeing, I’d use it.

Like Frank says, that rust won’t affect anything if the seal doesn’t ride there.  You can just put the crank back in the block with the bearings located properly, then lightly screw the block halves back together to see exactly where the upper seal rides.

You might be able to turn the seal around to get the lip to run on good smooth steal!  they will work either way.  Your only talking about a few pounds of pressure in that crankcase.

I checked out the seal lip location in relation to the rust.  With the end play of the crankshaft it is really too close to call.  Appreciate the idea of putting the seal in backwards.

Better not risk it, I’m sure you can find another decent crank for not much money

Yes, I put an ad on this website some time ago but have not found a good crank yet.

One will turn up, perhaps at an aomci swap meet.  You may end up buying a whole powerhead or “scrap engine” if the price is right
