      Good Point Frank
But dang- that spring is hard to get out of the lip seal.
On my parts list for Johnson electric start and manual start .It shows carbon seal for the bottom of crank.
But you never know what they did at the factory
I have seen some funky stuff before.

Lip seal was a mid-year change in 1955 25hp.  Continued early 1956 30hp till they realized the disastrous warranty claims and went back to the carbon seal.  So both types are found in 55-56 25 & 30 hp.

          Hi Rick,

I used to have a farm in Petersfield and a house in St. Laurent where I used to tackle the 6-foot waves of Lake Manitoba

There is a guy in Winnipeg (North End ?) that used to correspond with me on old outboard topics.

I’m not sure Brian Morrison still is a member here, but you should be able find him by consulting “the Oracle” (Google).

I’ve sent you a PM with his last known email address.

              Hi All,

Bob, I do understand I’d have to change the bearing to the  #375763.  I think the challenge is sourcing the bearing, carbon seal, spring and the related parts.  As well as having to open the crankcase to get at the bearing.

Al, I don’t use Facebook, although I do like the idea of free phone calls.  I may have to ask one of my daughters to explain this new fangled thing to me.  Frank was right, it was the garter spring.  What I found interesting was that both motors had the springs sitting on top of the water pump having slid down the driveshaft.  I haven’t had them running in at least 30 years.  I suspect they shook apart in the late 80’s when I last had them on the boat.  I glad Evinrude double stacked the seals as the second one seemed to be intact.

Rick – I’ve bought several of the carbon seal/spring/washer/retainer assembly on Ebay for a decent price.  There are also a couple of new 375763 bearings on Ebay right now for under $25.00.   Both of them are offered by sellers I’ve bought from before and they both are honest sellers – you should jump on that.

Maybe I can clarify a little.  The first page is from the 1955 25 HP parts catalog.  Notice that there are two seals 303804 (part no.2).  These are inserted into the body of the upper and lower crankshaft bearings.  One in each bearing.

Also attached is the parts catalog for 1956 30 HP.  Pages 16 and 17 show a single 303804 seal that is inserted into the top crankshaft bearing.  A second 303804 is not shown as he bottom crankshaft seal is replaced by the carbon seal.

Anyhow the point is that where two seals are used one gos with the upper crankshaft bearing and one goes with the lower.  Otherwise one seal goes with the upper bearing and the lower seal is the carbon seal.  That seal has a big spring.

                  Hope this helps.
