My 1956 Evinrude Fastwin 15 hp is giving me starting problems. I went through the ignition and carb because it hadn’t been run in a few years. The synchronization is set correctly. A couple of times I have been able to start it with the shift in forward (in a barrel) which allowed me to advance the mag more. My manuals don’t cover the parts that limit the mag plate movement when in neutral. Is there any adjustment of that lockout, or stop?

If everything else is right, there is usually plenty of neutral throttle on a Fastwin, to start it. I would double check the throttle plate to mag cam synch again. Remember that it’s not just about the throttle arm lining up with the mark on the cam roller. It’s about the actual throttle PLATE in the carb beginning to move, when the mark lines up with the cam roller. On these motors, wear on the cam roller and wear in the linkage to the carb can be significant enough that the plate really is not opening when the mark lines up. Also, make sure that the choke functions to also open the throttle plate even more, when it’s pulled out. When the choke is pulled, it is designed to open the throttle plate significantly more. Of course, also double check that you have two good sparks and good enough compression…..

        Long live American manufacturing!
