Recently purchased a 1956 Johnson 10 hp QD-17B Serial number 1422145.
The gear drive shaft from the steering handle to the gear that passes up to the throttle is missing. Prior owner used cable for controlling the throttle and removed the gear drive shaft part number 303142 pinion with gear and I need to replace it. The part is listed as 376692.
Found the part from one seller on Ebay, there are 2 listed with different pinion numbers as follows:
- 376689 303142 Johnson Evinrude Throttle Gear and Shaft and throttle pinion T39
- 377631 303142 Johnson Evinrude Throttle Gear and Shaft and throttle pinion T67
Is there a difference between these and if so which is the correct one.
Thank you.
February 16, 2023 at 1:41 pm #272781I couldn’t find anything in my Superceded P/N Listing book but the original parts manual gives P/N 376306 for QD-17 gear and shaft while P/N 376692 is for the gear and shaft for QD-17B and QD-17R.
I don’t know what the difference is in them unless one of them was still using the earlier stamped gear instead of the later cast gear. 303142 is given as the P/N for the pinion gear on all models. This is a common part and was used for many years on most models of Johnnyrudes.
Since this site was recently updated, I seem to have lost the capability to post PDF’s here. I was going to post the parts manual for you, but.

February 16, 2023 at 3:02 pm #2727851956 was a year of change for those parts. Old style was stamped brass gears, new style is cast bronze ball-type gears. The new style is much better and interchangeable with the old style, but cannot be mixed. If you choose one, you must use the matching type for the other one.

Thank you.

That’s not a silly question and in fact I think it’s quite a good one.
The stamped gears are just that, they were stamped out of a piece of flat material and have sharp points on the tips of the teeth. The cast ones are a lot thicker and have ball shaped tips on the teeth. You’ll know a stamped one when you see it.
The only problem with the cast gears is the teeth can break off if the throttle is turned with the tiller in the up position. This is real common on the 9.9/15 horse motors where the tiller can be raised way past the vertical position and the teeth are barely engaging.
I’ve never tried mismatching them and I doubt if it would work as they are two totally different animals. Who knows but the tooth count might be different to.
Now if I could just find some photos…..
