Thanks Bill – where does typically get put? Control box end or motor end? And is the idea that you just add tension until the throttle stops drifting?

They can be put anywhere along the throttle cable, preferably in an inconspicuous place. This is a device designed by a world leader in remote controls and cables; so even if it looks hokey, it works and it is approved by them. It is 100% stainless steel. I have seen them. Yes, it just causes a bit of drag by lightly pinching the cable.

Check inside the control box in THERE IS A DETENT to hold the throttle. it is not an adjustable friction setup.

In this diagram you can see the detents and their springs and the depressions the detents ride in. In the past, I’ve found any old grease on the springs tends to be dried out and hard which locks the springs in place.  Might be time to take the control box apart for a clean and lube.

Whoops, am having trouble trying to upload photos here at the moment but believe me, the detents are there!

This is great info.  I did take the control box apart but before this diagram.

Big shout out to BillW for this tip (https://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=TEL044386)  I got this beautiful $40 piece of stainless steel (which ticked me off!) but I have to say it worked absolutely perfectly.  So at least the problem is solved.  Now I can drive the boat and drink my beer at the same time.  A massive upgrade.  That said I will keep looking for a more “stealth” solution.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

Wow, that thing is $40 now? Holy crap. Well, an ice-cold beer and a boat ride does makes it ALL worthwhile.
