How do you rewind the recoil spring on the recoil start? I’m working on this motor for my neighbor and have it running pretty good in the tank but I made the mistake of taking the recoil mechanism apart to clean and grease , and the spring unwound. I know there has to be a simple way to do it but I’m not having any luck. I managed to carefully take one off a 7_1/2 hp Elgin and kept it wound all the way thru the transplant just to find out the gear is different. I’m hoping to swap the gear out by pulling the flywheel but I’d still like to know how to recoil them thanks

      It's a jungle out there.

Have a look at a Member’s How-to videos. Your Elgin was manufactured by West Bend which then evolved into Chrysler. One of them might answer your questions:

To rewimd the spring: Screw a bolt with a lockwasher into the center hole at the top. Put a wrench on the bolt and wind about 8 turns in the direction the rope comes out. The screw will try to pull loose but if you use an external tooth lockwasher and tighten very tight it will hold. When the spring is wound the 8 turns insert the transverse pin in the the tube aligning it with the spring end fitting. Remove your bolt and put i n the the original screw.
