      Hello,

I have a 1957 Evinrude Big Twin Electric Start I would like to use on my boat that had 1956 Big Twin. The 57 used the harness that plugged into the side where as the 56 the harness was hard wired to the motor. It is a complete 1956 harness with electric start button and choke. Is there a way for me to use this harness on my 57 Big Twin. Could a get a partial 57 harness (the part that plugs into the side of the motor) and splice or connect that to the 56 harness in some way?

      Thanks
      Greg

Should be doable. I’d think you can just hard wire the ’56 into the ’57 the same way it was on the ’56. Or if you want to spend some $$, the ’57 cable & plug is available from nymarine.ca

You might want to keep in mind the ’56 was a 6 volt system, so you will have to change the starting solenoid to a 12V one. Use an OMC solenoid, not a car solenoid so you dont destroy the safety switch.

          Thanks Frank
I do have a 57 plug and cable. Would I just wire that into the solenoid box?

Basically, yes. With a minimum of electrical circuit knowledge and knowing what wire does what, you should be able to figure it out.
