Rebuilt the carb new float and all. Ran great in the barrel. Took to lake and ran great then bogged down and would cough like it wanted to rev. It would for a very brief second then bog right back down. Ran like crap for 4 hours then all of a sudden ran near perfect. Would only go 8mph and at first I was bumping 12mph before iit bogged. Ran great for an hour then like crap again. It ate almost 6 gallons of gas in 5.5 hours. Water had waves 1 foot or less. 12 foot boat with 700lb of gear and guys and that’s high probably more like 550. Any ideas?

Well, the way you describe it running OK for a brief second makes it sound like ignition problems…Kinda hard to say without hearing the engine. Have you done a spark check? Compression check? This engine should be able to jump a 1/4" spark gap while cranking….
Perhaps it is a simple as bad plugs….
        Check the simple stuff…

Kinda what I was thinking. Just threw me for a loop how it all of a sudden ran like a raped date

That’s the way ignition problems are, kinda like switching a light on and off quickly…
Try this…Remove the recoil starter, disconnect the plug leads, then remove the inspection plate on top of the flywheel. Slowly rotate the flywheel around while having a look at the coils…You have definite ignition problems if the coils are split/cracked…
Don’t forget to try new plugs first though!

Pulled top plug and its been burning good but has carbon build up inside body of plug. Bottom plug has been burning good but looks like new in the body area. Hoping to pull inspection plate on flywheel this weekend. Seems as though its getting great spark

Once again, the spark you see when you crank the engine can be completely different from what is going on in the combustion chambers, it takes more energy to fire those plugs in the engine while it is running, and heat can also cause spark break down.
Go ahead and pull the flywheel inspection cover to have a peak, but please don’t forget to just try the engine with new plugs!
