I picked up a 1957 Evinrude 7.5 and its missing the head bolts. The story is it had a bad head gasket so he pulled the head and the guy passed before he got it repaired. Everything looks good on it and I would like to get it back to running. Problem is we could not find the head bolts and by the part number they dont have them anymore. Can anyone tell me the size of them? Hope to pick them up in a hardware store. Thinking a grade 8 or stainless will work. Looks like the had a lock washer on them to by the parts list?? Motor had been setting for years and piston was stuck but with a bit of Kroil I have it free again and everything looks good. Thanks in advance for any help on this motor!
October 29, 2022 at 4:30 pm #268406You can use a Grade 5 or Grade 8 bolt, but I’d stay away from stainless. Bolt size is 1/4-20 and 1-3/4″ length. That length may be hard to find at a hardware store but you can order online from Fastenal or McMaster Carr. A flat washer was used on the head bolts.

October 29, 2022 at 4:35 pm #268408A wild guess on my part is that the threads are national coarse 1/4-20.
I might suggest that you run a thread tap in these threaded holes before installing new head bolts. Many times these head bolts are hard to remove. The sealant used at the initial assembly left a gluey residue in the threads.October 29, 2022 at 5:32 pm #268409Thanks! Ill see what I can come up with.
October 30, 2022 at 9:28 am #268443The head bolts are 1/4-20. I have a “parts” 7.5 Evinrude. Therefore, I have the head bolts you need. If interested, email me at H5458@Comcast.net (or) text me at 856-466-8419.

November 13, 2022 at 2:11 pm #268993I recieved the head bolts from Fred and my hew headgasket. I have it together and compression looks to be 76# top and 75# bottom with fogging oil in cylinders. Gauge seems to be acurate on other motors. Is that to low? Motor had sat for years and was looking to get it to live again but not so sure if its going to worth it to go on. Needs all new ignitiion yet and carb cleaned. Your knowledge is welcomed!
